<JP baseball> Inter-league '23 finished, who won the championship?

'23 NPB inter-league games have finished today!

Under current rule, each team plays 3 games against other league teams (vs 6 teams), so all teams go through 18 games during 30/May/'23 ~ 22/Jun/'23.

Every year, the result of inter-league games is regarded quite important for each team, because both winning and losing streak tends to be long. In Japan, some teams are good at playing against other league, but some are not.

But this year, the situation was different, the gap between 12 teams were quite small and it was the very last day that "Yokohama DeNa Baystars" became the inter-league champion for their first time ever in their history! As can be seen in the final standings (below), 4 teams won 11 games, but Baystars won among them by the gap of TQB (Total Quality Balance *).

This is the first time ever in NPB history that TQB became the determinant of the final champion team, so Japanese baseball fans suddenly started searching what it is.

(*) TQB = (Runs scoreed / # of offence innings) - (Runs allowed / # of defence innings)

Here's the final standings:

↓↓↓

# Team (Area/league) W L T PCT GB

1 Baystars (Yokohama/C) 11 7 0 .611 -

1 Hawks (Fukuoka/P) 11 7 0 .611 -

1 Baffaloes (Osaka/P) 11 7 0 .611 -

1 Giants (Tokyo/C) 11 7 0 .611 -

5 Fighters (Hokkaido/P) 10 8 0 .556 1.0

6 Golden Eagles (Tohoku, Sendai/P) 9 9 0 .500 2.0

6 Carp (Hiroshima/C) 9 9 0 .500 2.0

8 Marines (Chiba/P) 7 9 2 .438 3.0

9 Tigers (Osaka/C) 7 10 1 .412 3.5

9 Dragons (Nagoya/C) 7 10 1 .412 3.5

11 Swallows (Tokyo/C) 7 11 0 .389 4.0

12 Lions (Saitama/P) 6 12 0 .333 5.0

When discussing Japan's inter-league, one of the highlights is "Which league won more?"

Recent years, Pacific league teams tend to dominate the inter-league. People often discuss that Pacific league teams are stronger than the Central teams based on that result.

What happened this year is like this:

↓↓↓

# Team W L T PCT GB

1 Pacific league 54 52 2 .509 -

2 Central league 52 54 2 .491 2.0

At a glance, Pacific won again, however, the gap is really small and is almost tie.

Meaning both leagues are playing at similar level, and this might be the indicator for the Japan series... who is going to be the final champion of 2023???
